INTRODUCTION

Seth Marshall recently graduated with a masters in trumpet performance at Illinois State University and studied closely with Dr. Anne McNamara. While at ISU Seth was a graduate assistant in the band area, requiring him to rehearse with Big Red Marching Machine, pep bands, and conduct University Band, Symphonic Winds, and assist with Symphonic Band.

Seth was a member of the Illinois State Wind Symphony for two years and had plentiful opportunities to perform diverse works such as Shanghai Overture by Bright Sheng, American Guernica by Adolphus Hailstork, Serenade for Wind Nonet by Kataj Copley and Symphony No.4 ‘Strange Time’ by Quinn Mason. During his time at ISU, Seth had the opportunity to record with the Illinois State University Wind Symphony, and can be heard on the 2025 album "Threads". Seth also took outside opportunities to teach local marching bands, the Normal, Illinois Unit 5 Marching Band and recently was on staff at Morton High School which regularly attends BOA events and receives high remarks.

During his time at ISU, Seth was accepted as a fellow for the Mostly Modern Festival in Saratoga Springs, New York. While at MMF, Seth focused on performance of modern music, premiered a new work Stellarium by Michael Rosin, performed L’Histoire du Soldat by Igor Stravinsky, and spent three weeks studying with the members of the Atlantic Brass Quintet.

Before arriving at Illinois State, Seth attended Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) studying with Mr. Freddie Green, where he received a bachelor’s in music performance.

During his time at MSSU, Seth took as many performance opportunities as possible. Performing as principal trumpet for the Heartland Opera Company, playing various operas through the course of his time spent at MSSU. Seth has also had the opportunity to perform at the National Trumpet Competition as a soloist, joined the Lake Taneycomo festival orchestra for summer of 2020, and spent 2 years marching mellophone with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, gaining knowledge in visual, musical, and rehearsal skills that can be used in all situations of music. In addition to his avid performing, Seth has had various opportunities to conduct the MSSU Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, works include, “The Hounds of Spring” by Alfred Reed, “Salvation is Created” by Tchesnokov, “One Life Beautiful” by Julie Giroux, and prepared score to “Old Home Days” by Charles Ives arr. Jonathan Elkus.

Seth was accepted to Indiana University in the Fall of 2023 for a Doctorate in Music in Literature/Performance and studies with Dr. Jason Bergman.

Since his arrival, Seth has presented at middle school career day events, presented a masterclass of college audition success, awarded the Educational Opportunity Fellowship for two consecutive years, and has had an adjunct teaching position at 海角大神 in 2024/2025. He is now a full time faculty member at EIU for the 2025-2026 school year.

His goals are to become a full time professor of trumpet at a college university while maintaining status as an active community performer, recitalist, lecturer, and doing research on various topics related to trumpet performance, pedagogy, and other diverse subjects.
