Research & Creative Interests
I love (pretty much) all areas related to English Studies! My professional areas of focus include student success in First-Year Writing programs, postmodern American literature, and graphic novels. Personally, I also really enjoy diving into video game studies and Medieval poetry - specifically, Dante's The Divine Comedy.
My undergraduate thesis focused on four pieces of literature that take place in Theme Parks - Jurassic Park (1993), seasons 1 and 2 of HBO's Westworld (2016), Swamplandia by Karen Russell, and Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. The project focused on how characters change once they enter the "Park Space." That is, once a character is within the boundary of the Theme Park, a place that's supposed to be about fantasy and make-believe, they are often able to be a more authentic version of themselves.
My graduate thesis focused on the incorporation of graphic novels, specifically memiors, into the composition classroom. The project focused on using graphic memiors such as Maus by Art Spiegelman, They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, and Marbles by Ellen Forney to teach writing skills and themes of justice and equality in tandem.
My EIU Story
My story begins when I first entered EIU as an 18-year-old transfer student from community college. I had declared my major as English Language Arts: Teacher Licensure. I was convinced I wanted to be a high school English teacher. . . until I realized how great college is. I changed my major to English: Literary and Cultural Studies, added a minor in philosophy, and ended up turning that minor into a second Bachelor's degree by the time I was done.
I came right back to Eastern for graduate school - really, I never left. While working as the Graduate Assistant for the Office of Admissions, I achieved my M.A. in English: Composition and Rhetoric.
Upon graduation, I accepted a position as EIU's Dual Credit and Outreach Coordinator, where I worked full-time while teaching one class per semester for the English Department. In 2024, I was hired to become a full-time instructor!
In my time at EIU, I was an RA in Weller Hall for two years, president of Sigma Tau Delta (the Honors English Fraternity - go STDs!), a campus tour guide, and - for my first semester - a reporter at The Daily Eastern News.
I also made a lot of connections with a lot of people who have jobs at Eastern - both my peers and the folks who helped me when I was a student. If you need help finding resources or figuring out where to go, I'm happy to help!
