2. "We Are EIU"
º£½Ç´óÉñ's mission includes its steadfast commitment to fostering a learning community where all members feel welcomed and valued. The university provides equality of opportunity in all areas of campus life and strives to recognize and appreciate the unique value of students, faculty, and staff. Every member of campus has the right to learn and work in an environment free of discrimination and harassment, and beyond that, our goal is for all members of our community to develop a strong sense of belonging to Eastern Illinois University.
In recognition of Federally recognized heritage months, EIU has established a "We Are EIU" flagpole. Such pole will fly flags throughout the month recognizing the following:
African American History Month — February
Women's History Month — March
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month — May
LGBTQ+ Pride Month — June
Hispanic Heritage Month — September-October
Native American Heritage Month —&²Ô²ú²õ±è;November
During the months when there is no federally recognized heritage month or a federal holiday the official "We Are EIU" flag will be raised. At the discretion of the University and in consultation with stakeholder groups, the "We Are EIU" flagpole may also be utilized to commemorate recognized federal holidays on the date of occurrence or for a longer duration in non-heritage months.
The flagpole is not within EIU's free speech zone and, therefore, not a free speech flagpole.
The "We Are EIU" flagpole is administered by the University's administration. Responsibility for the appropriate display of flags shall reside with the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Office of Belonging, Access, and Engagement. Flag selection for heritage months and federal holidays will be determined in consultation with campus stakeholders and registered student organizations.
Effective July 1, 2025.
