Overview

Criminology seeks to understand the causes and consequences of crime and criminal behavior, and Criminal Justice, the systems society puts in place to control and manage it.  

Our program aims to prepare students to think critically about crime and the criminal justice system and to develop the research skills to practice in the field. At EIU, you will engage with various theoretical explanations that have been posited to explain crime and criminal behavior, analyze the major institutions and processes of the criminal justice system, learn the analytical skills necessary to collect and interpret criminological data, and train for a wide range of careers related to criminology and criminal justice (e.g. law enforcement, corrections, law, social services).
