Independent Study Policy

- All faculty may supervise a maximum of three independent studies per semester. If departmental needs dictate, the Chair of the Department may assign more than three independent studies to a faculty member.
- Approval of an independent study is contingent on completing a proposal form prior to registration and is subject to the approval of the faculty supervisor and the department chair.
- Students must have completed six semester hours of PLS and be of senior standing in order to register for an independent study. A maximum of six semester hours may be earned in this course. A maximum of three semester hours may be applied to the major in Political Science.
- Students should meet with the faculty supervisor on a weekly basis for a minimum of 30 minutes if the student is enrolled for three hours of academic credit. If the student is enrolled for two credit hours or less, they should meet with the faculty supervisor on a bi-monthly basis for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- If an internet based independent study becomes necessary, students should maintain weekly contact with the supervising faculty member.
- Students should produce in the range of eight to ten typed pages per credit hour. The faculty member has discretion over the type of writing assignment.
