To Bear the Mark of Time
Matthew Boonstra, Armando Guadalupe Cortés, Jeanne Dunning, Ben Gould, and Cole Lu
On view Sept. 23, 2022 – Jan. 28, 2023; Main Galleries
The physicality of the human body is inextricably linked to how one perceives the movement of time—in fact, the experience of being misaligned with the present is often described in relation to physical tactility when we say that someone is “out of touch.” To create art is to perform in a body at the dangerous juncture between present and future; to craft objects, images, and actions from raw materials; to share stories of becoming; and to even predict endings and imagine rebirths.
The artists in this exhibition make meaning using materials charged with significance, precise formal sensitivities, and invented mythologies. Contending with measures of energy, tangibility, and understanding, their work explores what it means to bear the mark of time and to continue making meaning from that mark.
