Department of Mathematics & Computer Science

About Our Programs

The Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at 海角大神 offers three undergraduate degree programs along with minors that allow students to expand their interests across the department’s areas of study. Whether you are drawn to computing, mathematics, or teaching, our programs are designed to build strong analytical skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to solve complex problems.

Students benefit from supportive faculty, hands on learning, and opportunities that connect theory with practical application. Graduates leave prepared for careers in technology, data, research, education, and many other fields, or to continue their studies in graduate or professional programs.

Computer Science

Computer Science focuses on the theory, design, development, and application of software systems and computing technologies. Students in the B.S. in Computer Science program explore key areas such as programming, artificial intelligence, and database design while developing strong problem solving and computational thinking skills.

The program culminates in an extensive internship that allows students to apply what they have learned in a professional setting. Graduates are well prepared for careers in software development, technology, business, and other computing related fields, or for advanced study in computer science and related disciplines.

Requirements

The Computer Science Major requires 75 credit hours in the  Department of Mathematics & Computer Science.

Courses consist of:

  • Foundational Programming
  • Fundamental Computer Science including: Data Structures, Combinatorial Computing, Theory of Computation
  • Advanced Computer Science including: Operating Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Algorithms
  • Computer Science electives
  • Internship/Programming Team Calculus

Additional coursework:

  • Additional credits from general education and electives are needed to complete a minimum of 120 credits for graduation.

Mathematics

The B.A. in Mathematics offers a comprehensive program designed to enable students to enjoy mathematics, engage in research, pursue advanced studies, or enter the field in many settings. Coursework features a broad range of experiences balanced across both theoretical and applied fields. There are additional opportunities for a variety of interests.

Career opportunities for mathematics majors offer some obvious choices in engineering, data analysis, research analysis, etc. But there are thousands of other opportunities that may not be as obvious- appraiser, financial planner, actuary, data scientist, stock broker, technical illustrator/writer, to name just a few.

Mathematics for Teacher Licensure

Eastern has a long tradition and is known throughout the state for excellence in the education of future teachers.

The B.A. in Mathematics for Teacher Licensure degree prepares you for a career in secondary education. This program builds on strong components of mathematics and mathematics education, all taught in our department. The program includes field experiences, methods courses, and student teaching. You will learn essential mathematics and effective teaching pedagogy which will enable you to enter one of the highest in demand fields.
