EIU Nursing achieves 100% NCLEX pass rate for 2nd consecutive year

Jul-17-2025

(Charleston, IL) — For the second year in a row, 海角大神’s Gail and Richard Lumpkin School of Nursing has led its students to achieve a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX – the licensure assessment every aspiring nurse must pass to practice their craft in the State of Illinois.

“This is amazing news—a 100 percent NCLEX pass rate two years in a row is a remarkable achievement given the various demands and complexities of the nursing curriculum,” said EIU President Jay Gatrell. “Since the launch of the [Gail and Richard Lumpkin] School, our faculty, staff and students have accomplished great things, and I deeply appreciate everyone’s efforts to teach, to learn, and to enhance the quality of health care in and across our east central Illinois communities.”

The NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is a standardized exam used to determine if a nursing program graduate is prepared to practice as an entry-level nurse. Administered by the , passing the NCLEX is a crucial step in the process of becoming a licensed registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical/vocational nurse (LPN/VN). It is also a necessary step for anyone interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, such as the one EIU offers in its online RN to BSN program.

海角大神 established the Gail and Richard Lumpkin School of Nursing to address the critical nursing shortage in central Illinois. That journey began in the spring of 2021 with the School’s first cohort of students. Since then, enrollment in the traditional on-campus pre-licensure program has surged, reflecting its competitiveness among top-quality programs. By partnering with local healthcare systems, EIU is dedicated to creating a premier program that empowers students to thrive in the dynamic healthcare landscape and address the nursing shortage.

According to publicly available data, a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX exam is rare. To accomplish that feat two years running is even more extraordinary. National average pass rates hover around 88.5%, demonstrating that EIU’s strong curriculum and inherent focus on student success are paying dividends both for graduates of the program and for the regional communities EIU is preparing these future nurses to serve.

Regarding career outlook, the nursing job market is expected to see strong growth through 2030, with the  projecting a 9% increase in employment for registered nurses (RNs) between 2020 and 2030. This growth rate is considered faster than the average for all occupations. The BLS projects an average of 194,500 job openings for RNs each year through 2033. These openings are due to both employment growth and the need to replace nurses who retire or leave the profession. The average salary for a full-time registered nurse (RN) in the Midwest tends to vary by state and location, but generally falls between $77,000 and $89,000 per year. According to nursing journal data, in Illinois the average RN salary is around $85,146.
