Subject: Targeted Phishing Attempts at EIU
EIU脗聽has seen an increasing number of脗聽faculty-targeting脗聽phishing attempts脗聽using脗聽already established platforms such as Google Docs and脗聽Microsoft脗聽SharePoint.脗聽Receiving emails from脗聽official-looking and recognizable脗聽sources脗聽makes it difficult to脗聽determine if脗聽an脗聽email is legitimate.脗聽Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments you are not expecting.脗聽Check with脗聽your leadership or脗聽coworkers before opening an脗聽invite脗聽to a service or document.脗聽When脗聽in doubt, please submit the message to脗聽phishing@eiu.edu脗聽or脗聽from the menu bar in Outlook脗聽select脗聽芒鈧揓unk芒鈧澝偮爐hen脗聽芒鈧揚hishing芒鈧.脗聽
This year,脗聽EIU脗聽implemented multifactor authentication and the platform has脗聽helped脗聽protect EIU employees and data.脗聽When asked to verify your login,脗聽please脗聽continue to be diligent and脗聽check脗聽the脗聽location of the login脗聽and react脗聽properly.脗聽If you are not actively logging in and see脗聽the location is not nearby, please deny the login, mark as脗聽fraud, change your password脗聽at https://password.eiu.edu,脗聽and脗聽contact ITS.脗聽

Below are recent examples of phishing attempts and the脗聽indicators脗聽that the email脗聽was not legitimate.脗聽
- The message was sent from脗聽an individual脗聽who was not an脗聽EIU employee.脗聽
- The email carbon脗聽copied脗聽had a脗聽non @eiu.edu脗聽email脗聽address.脗聽
- Names throughout the message change.脗聽
- Change in normal process of getting the information脗聽and/or not expecting the document.脗聽脗聽脗聽
- Once the link is clicked,脗聽the脗聽document asks脗聽for脗聽EIU username/password脗聽in脗聽a脗聽non-standard way.脗聽脗聽EIU脗聽utilizes脗聽https://panthermail.eiu.edu/脗聽for most login脗聽sessions.脗聽
- Look for warnings脗聽within the subject such as [SPAM]脗聽
