EIU Department of Physics

Astronomy

The Astronomy option at 海角大神 is part of the Physics major and is designed for students who want to explore the universe while building a strong foundation in physics and mathematics.

If you’ve ever looked up at the night sky and wondered how stars form, how planets move, or what exists beyond our galaxy, this program gives you the tools to find those answers. You’ll study the structure and evolution of the universe, including stars, planets, galaxies, and the forces that shape them.

This option is a great fit for students who are curious, analytical, and interested in science, math, and problem-solving. You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to enjoy asking big questions and working toward understanding them.

As an Astronomy student, you’ll take courses in physics, calculus, and computer science, along with specialized classes in astrophysics, optics, and astronomy. You’ll also gain hands-on experience through labs, observational work, and research opportunities. Students can participate in research focused on Near Earth Objects (asteroids whose orbits may intersect with Earth), cosmic explosions like gamma-ray bursts and supernovae, and hands-on observing with our telescopes.

One of the highlights of the program is access to the EIU Observatory, which features both a computer-controlled telescope and a solar telescope. This allows you to observe and collect data day or night and apply what you learn in a real-world setting.

What sets EIU apart is the opportunity to work closely with faculty in small classes where you are more than just a number. You’ll have opportunities to participate in research, present your work, and be part of a supportive academic community.

Graduates are well prepared for graduate study in astronomy or physics, as well as careers that value strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
