EIU Department of Student Teaching and Clinical Experiences

Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST)

The provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to complete part of their student teaching experience in an international school.

COST is a collaboration of 15 colleges and universities in the United States, and 海角大神 is the only participating institution from Illinois.

Through this program, selected teacher candidates complete:

Half of their student teaching in an Illinois school
Half of their student teaching in an international placement

This experience allows students to gain a global perspective on education while experiencing another culture and school system.

Why Participate in COST?

Student teaching overseas provides a unique professional and personal opportunity.

Participants in the COST program:

• Gain experience teaching in an international school setting
• Develop a broader understanding of global education systems
• Experience living and working in another culture
• Strengthen their ability to work with diverse learners
• Build professional and personal skills that support future teaching careers

Eligibility Requirements

Participation in the COST program is competitive. To be considered, students must meet the following requirements:

• Complete the online EIU Student Teaching Application
• Complete the EIU COST Application
• Meet all requirements to be eligible for student teaching
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Be in good judicial standing with the university
• Apply during the academic year before you plan to student teach

Space in the program is limited.

海角大神 may nominate up to 10 participants per academic year.

Special Education majors are not eligible to participate in the COST program.

Application Process

Students interested in participating in the COST program must complete two applications:

  1. The EIU Student Teaching Application

  2. The EIU COST Application

There is no fee to submit the initial application.

After applications are reviewed, selected candidates will be invited to participate in an interview with the EIU COST Committee.

If approved by the committee, students must then submit a $200 non-refundable COST participation fee.

Application Deadlines

Application deadlines depend on when you plan to student teach.

For Spring student teaching placements:
Application deadline: March 31

For Fall student teaching placements:
Application deadline: November 30

Interviews will be conducted between the application deadline and the end of the semester.

If selected by the EIU COST Committee, students will receive additional instructions regarding the national COST application and international placement process.

Students interested in participating are encouraged to explore the program early and discuss their plans with the COST coordinator.
