Classroom Observation Guidelines for Education Students

Education majors at 海角大神 frequently complete classroom observations as part of their coursework and field experiences. These observations provide an opportunity to learn from practicing teachers and to begin developing the professional habits expected of future educators.

When you enter a K-12 school as an observer, you are participating as a pre-service professional and representing 海角大神. The guidelines below are designed to ensure that your visit runs smoothly and that school districts remain willing partners in supporting EIU teacher preparation.

Please review the expectations below before arranging or beginning any classroom observation.

Observation Preparation Checklist

Before requesting or completing a classroom observation, confirm that you have:

• Completed the required criminal background check
• Reviewed the professional expectations outlined on this page
• Identified a teacher who is willing to host your observation
• Confirmed the observation requirements for your course

Completing these steps in advance helps ensure a positive experience for both you and the classroom teacher.

Legal and Safety Requirements

School districts must ensure the safety and privacy of their students. For this reason, all EIU students entering classrooms must follow these basic requirements.

Background Check

All education students must complete the required criminal background check before entering a school for observation or field experiences.

Identification

You must wear your Panther Card in a visible ID holder while you are in the school building.

School Procedures

Follow all visitor procedures required by the school or district. This may include signing in and out at the main office or wearing a visitor badge.

Parking

Park only in areas designated for visitors or by school personnel.

These requirements are established by the school districts that partner with EIU and must be followed at all times.

Professional Expectations in Schools

While observing in a classroom, you are expected to conduct yourself as a developing professional.

Follow the teacher’s directions

The classroom teacher is responsible for the students and the learning environment. Follow their instructions and respect the routines they have established.

Maintain professional behavior

Arrive on time, be respectful, and remain attentive throughout the observation.

Dress professionally

Your appearance should reflect the professional expectations of a school setting.

Limit technology use

Do not use phones or other personal devices unless the classroom teacher gives permission.

Maintain confidentiality

Information about students, classrooms, or schools should never be shared outside of the observation setting.

These expectations help maintain the trust that school districts place in EIU teacher candidates.

Arranging and Completing Observations

When arranging a classroom observation:

• Contact the teacher in advance and schedule a mutually convenient time.
• Confirm the date, time, and expected length of the visit.
• Follow any specific procedures the school requires for visitors.

During your visit:

• Arrive a few minutes early.
• Introduce yourself to the teacher and follow their guidance.
• Observe carefully and take notes as appropriate for your course.

After the observation:

• Thank the teacher for allowing you to observe.
• Complete any assignments or reflections required for your course.

Professional courtesy and respect for the teacher’s time are essential.
