Education majors at 海角大神 often complete classroom observations as part of their coursework and early field experiences. This page explains how to request permission to observe in local schools.
Observation procedures differ depending on the school district. Please carefully review the instructions for the school where you plan to observe before submitting your request.
Students wishing to observe at Charleston High School must follow the procedures below.
Charleston High School operates on a block schedule. Course periods meet on alternating days of the week, and Friday schedules differ from Monday–Thursday schedules.
Before submitting an observation request:
• Review the Charleston High School Faculty List for the current semester.
• The third column of the spreadsheet indicates whether a teacher is willing to host observation students, practicum students, or both.
• Only request placements with teachers who accept the type of experience required for your course.
• Do not request observations during teacher prep periods or during periods with no listed availability.
Observations may only be requested with teachers listed on the faculty availability sheet unless prior approval is granted.
Observations cannot be conducted on the following dates during the 2025–2026 academic year:
January 19, 2026
February 16, 2026
March 6, 2026
March 16–20, 2026
April 3, 2026

Requests must be submitted at least 7 days before the observation date.
After submitting your request:
• Check with your instructor to confirm whether the request has been approved.
• Candidate names are sent to Charleston High School each Thursday afternoon.
• If your name is not on the approved list, you may not complete the observation.
If your request is approved, you must bring a copy of your Criminal Background Investigation (CBI) to the school.
When you sign in at the school office for your first visit, ask the office staff whether they would like to keep a copy or make a copy of your CBI.
CBI reports can be obtained from the College of Education Dean’s Office (Buzzard Hall 1420).
Students may not participate in observations without a completed background investigation.
Students observing at Mattoon High School must follow these procedures.
Students must bring a copy of their Criminal Background Investigation (CBI) report each time they visit Mattoon High School.
Before your observation:
• Review the Mattoon High School observer guidelines.
• Follow the school’s visitor policy when you arrive.
All observers must report to the high school office 15 minutes before the scheduled observation and must remain until students are dismissed for that class period.
Review the Mattoon High School Faculty List for the current semester.
• Only class periods marked “Yes” are available for observations.
• Observations may only be conducted with teachers listed on the availability sheet unless prior approval is granted.
Observations cannot occur on the following dates during the 2025–2026 academic year:
January 19, 2026
February 13, 2026
February 16, 2026
March 30 – April 6, 2026
Additional unavailable dates may occur due to state testing. Check this page before requesting an observation.
Complete the at least 7 days before the observation date.
After submitting your request:
• Confirm with your instructor whether the request has been approved.
• Candidate names are sent weekly to Mattoon High School.
• If your name is not on the approved list, you may not complete the observation.
Students may also complete observations in other schools where 海角大神 has an active partnership agreement.
Before arranging an observation:
• Identify the school where you would like to observe.
• Confirm that with that district.
A list of Illinois schools with current agreements is available on the observation website.
However, new agreements may be considered, provided the request is submitted at least 14 days in advance.
For schools other than Charleston or Mattoon:
• Contact the principal by phone to arrange the date and time of your visit.
After arranging the visit:
• Complete the .
• The request must be submitted at least 7 days before the observation.
Your instructor will review and approve or deny the request.
Observation requests may be denied if:
• The form is incomplete
• The request is submitted outside the required timeline
• The school does not have an agreement with EIU
• The observation is requested in an out-of-state school
If your observation request is approved, you must bring a copy of your Criminal Background Investigation (CBI) when visiting the school.
